Rescued melon-headed whale dies at Mote Marine Lab

A melon-headed whale rescued by Mote Marine Laboratory died on Friday.

According to Gretchen Lovewell, Program Manager for Stranding Investigations, after a rapid decline in health overnight, the decision was made to humanely euthanize the whale, nicknamed “Bolt.”

Bolt was one of three whales rescued in recent weeks by Mote Marine Lab.

Two rescued pygmy killer whales that were found beached in Clearwater also died this week.
