SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota police responded to a shooting at Sarasota Commons Friday morning.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, the shooting happened at about 11:30 a.m. and is believed to be an isolated incident.

One victim was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment and no arrests have been made at this time, according to police.

“Anytime there’s a shooting in the city of Sarasota, any time of the day, any time of the week, we take it seriously,” a police spokesperson said. “But yes, this is unusual for a shooting to occur in broad daylight on a Friday.”

Police said it is unclear if this was a targeted shooting or a random incident, and it is unclear how many people were involved at this time.

News Channel 8 spoke to a mother who was with her children when the shooting happened.

“It’s definitely something I’ve never been through, especially in this general area of Sarasota, I’ve never seen anything like that happen here,” said Madison, who didn’t want to share her full name due to safety concerns.

She said she was going to see her mom at the dry cleaners and pick up a shirt.

Suddenly, her Friday morning took a different direction when she heard yelling followed by gunshots.

She said she was halfway in the door and immediately thought of her children.

“I went to jump in the backseat of my car, on top of my kids, so that way, I didn’t know where they were coming from, so if we got hit with them, it would be me,” she said. “By the time it was over with and I got up to look, the car was gone and I walked over and the guy was just laying in the road.”

She said she keeps replaying what happened in her mind, over and over again.

“I was kind of frantic and I ran back to my mom over there and we ended up calling 91, and someone started CPR. I was with my kids because they were scared,” Madison said.

The witness said hours later, she is still shaken up.

“I’m shaking, I’ve thrown up a couple times, honestly and I’m relieved that we’re safe, but the guy is on my mind a lot,” she said.
