SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota County deputies killed a suspect in a domestic situation Sunday morning after he pulled a gun on them, according to Sheriff Kurt Hoffman.
Hoffman said the incident began after the sheriff’s office got a call at 9:06 a.m. about a man threatening a woman with a gun at a home on Tarawa Drive. According to the sheriff’s office, the man and woman were believed to be in a relationship.
The sheriff said the woman woke up to Brian Underwood, 47, pointing a gun at her. Within around five minutes, deputies arrived at the scene and tried to command Underwood to leave his house.
Hoffman said Underwood eventually invited the deputies inside to get the victim, who hid herself inside a bedroom while calling 911. Four deputies entered the home through the front door — left open by the suspect’s mother, who was in the house as well before leaving during the disturbance.
The deputies found the suspect, who had his hands up. According to the sheriff’s office, the deputies to give orders to de-escalate the situation only for Underwood to pull a gun from his waistband, put a bullet in the chamber, and pointed it at the deputies.
Hoffman said two deputies fired at Underwood, killing him.
Underwood had a previous arrest for domestic violence out of Citrus County and had previous encounters with Sarasota County deputies for other domestic incidents that did not end with him being arrested , according to the sheriff’s office.
The shooting is still under investigation.
