A second person has died after a chain-reaction crash in North Port on Sunday.
North Port officials say at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, a driver failed to slow down for traffic and caused the crash on U.S. 41 near West Villages Parkway.
Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies were helping to manage traffic as patrons of the Atlanta Braves game were leaving the stadium. As this was happening, a driver heading south on U.S. 41 failed to slow down and crashed into the car in front of him, killing one of the passengers and leaving the driver of that car in critical condition. On Monday, North Port police said that the critically-injured driver had died.
WFLA has learned George Almeder, 81 and his wife Rosalie Almeder, 79 died in the crash they were on their way to visit their son in North Port. They were married for 60 years.
Investigators suspect the driver who caused the crash may have been speeding.
The collision started a chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles and an unmanned deputy motorcycle.
The driver who caused the crash has been identified but her name will not be released as an investigation into the crash is ongoing. North Port police believe alcohol is suspected to be a factor and criminal charges may be forthcoming.
