Bradenton man charged with manslaughter in death of 3-month-old

A 26-year-old Bradenton man is now facing aggravated manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a 3-month-old.

Uvo-Kk Ayoma Uvo was initially charged with aggravated child abuse and child neglect in December of 2017 when the incident happened. The Sarasota Police Department says his charges were upgraded based on the medical examiner’s final report.

On Dec. 27, 2017, police say a 911 call came in from a mother saying her 3-month-old son was not breathing and unresponsive. Officers and paramedics responded to Lockwood Ridge and 17th Street in Sarasota and rushed the child to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. According to an affidavit, the child was not breathing but had a slight pulse when he was taken to the hospital.

According to detectives, the baby’s mother said Uvo drove her to a nail salon with her 3-month-old in the car. When the woman called him to get picked up, she says Uvo arrived with the child who was lifeless and felt slightly cold to the touch.

When the mother called 911, police say Uvo ran from the scene because he has three warrants out of Lee County.

The child was eventually taken to All Children’s Hospital for further treatment, where he later died on Dec. 29.

Police say doctors at All Children’s Hospital told detectives they suspected the child was abused. A police affidavit states initial tests of brain function showed no brain waves and swelling to the brain.

Detectives finally got in touch with Uvo on Dec. 28 and charged him with aggravated child abuse and child neglect.

Last week, a medical examiner released a final report on the child’s death, ruling the manner of death homicide from being assaulted by another person. The examiner determined the cause of death was craniocerebral trauma.

Uvo is now being held at the Sarasota County Jail.
