Active shooter training for Sarasota County School Police

In a matter of months, Sarasota County Schools cobbled together a police department from scratch.

On Friday they showed their worth while taking part in active shooter training. In the scenario, a local elementary school was invaded by an armed gunman. So these officers were tasked to find him.

Just a few short months ago, this police department was unimaginable and many were concerned.

The start of school came and went, and here they are.

The officers have an average of 23 years of experience and they’re ignoring the critics.

“The biggest thing for me is kids. I’ve got three daughters of my own,” said Sgt. Steve Kim.

No matter their experience, practice makes perfect.

“I tell ya, it does put a chill up your spine when you see a law enforcement officer take control of a classroom,” said Superintendent Todd Bowden.

Superintendent Bowden feels the public can be confident that these officers are ready.

“I’m sorry, you don’t get used to it and I hope I never do,” said Bowden.

These officers can’t rest on their laurels. These kids are counting on them.

“Your traditional waiting for three or four officers, that’s just not a tactic that’s being employed anymore,” said Sgt. Kim.

“We’re evolving as society changes and we’re trying to meet the needs most importantly, of the students.”

The officers plan to do more of this training periodically, and also practice with other departments around the county.
