Video: Previous coverage of the Sarasota Commons shooting

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A second person was arrested who was involved in the shooting at Sarasota Commons last month, according to an affidavit.

On Jan. 19, Sarasota police said the newly arrested suspect, 32-year-old Joseph Brice Jr. was driving around to different banks withdrawing cash from fake accounts with another suspect, 26-year-old Juan Claudio, and the gunshot victim, Jamez White.

Claudio allegedly owed a lot of money to Brice from a separate bank fraud scheme. An affidavit said Brice planned on robbing Claudio.

While making a stop at a post office in the Sarasota Commons plaza, Claudio went inside, as Brice and White remained in the car. According to the affidavit, Claudio heard five gunshots and ran back outside to find his car missing and White bleeding on the ground. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

White’s sister was interviewed by police who told them she got a call from Claudio, who told her Brice shot White, the affidavit said.

Police seized the car and found several high-dollar money bands, a Chase Bank receipt, and a projectile in the pocket of the front passenger door.

According to officials, six gunshots were heard on surveillance footage in that area.

Brice was arrested on probable cause and is facing charges of murder with a firearm.
