SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A shooting at a Sarasota vacation rental home landed two people in the hospital on Monday.
According to a release from the Sarasota Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of Jackson Drive and South Washington Drive just before 1 a.m.
Police discovered that two adults were shot at a vacation rental home. Both victims were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
“The public is not believed to be in any danger,” Sarasota police wrote in a release. “This is an active and ongoing investigation.”
Surrounding the scene of the shooting, there were empty bottles and cans of alcohol on the ground, in the hedges, and even on the roof of the rental property.
One neighbor who heard the gunfire said it all started with some sort of a commotion.
“It was very, very loud like they were in my bedroom. I live two houses from here and it was very very loud. I was scared. I said, oh my God, what is going on now in our peaceful neighborhood,” said longtime resident Manuel Chepote.
Chepote says he and other neighbors have raised concerns surrounding vacation rentals in their community. City leaders put regulations in place to limit occupancy and require registration, but some feel there needs to be more restrictions in place.
“These people who come in and out of our neighborhood, we don’t know who they are, and look what happened last night, someone could have been killed,” said Chepote.
City officials confirmed the rental home is one of 140 registered with the city. It’s operated by Lido Key Vacations. Representatives with the company told 8 On Your Side they had no comment regarding what took place early Monday morning.
No additional details have been released about the incident or the alleged shooter, but police are asking for neighbors to check their surveillance footage and share any information that can help solve this case.
