(WFLA) – A sailor has been rescued after spending two harrowing months lost at sea, witnessing the deaths of his three shipmates and forced to eat seagulls for survival.
The Columbian sailor was picked in a desolate part of the Pacific Ocean by the Panamanian cargo ship Nikkei Verde, NBC News reported.
The 29-year-old was on a powerless, 23-foot skiff on its way to China in late April.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the man told them a group of 4 men had started out more than two months ago. Several weeks ago, the skiff’s engine stopped working and the men resorted to eating fish and seagulls, but the three other men did not survive.
“This mariner … is very fortunate the crew of the Nikkei Verde happened upon him, as the area he was in is not heavily trafficked,” said Lt. Cmdr. John MacKinnon with the Coast Guard in Honolulu.
