TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we take a look at diversity in the long-distance running community.
As we celebrate Black History Month, a member of Tampa’s Black Girls Run group joins the show to discuss the importance of representation in this sport.
Tia Pettygrue is a Tampa running coach and has run races across the country.
She talks about her experience as a Black woman at these events and how she wants other Black women and men to feel about distance running. Road races are often overwhelmingly white, so being a part of Black Girls Run helps spread the love for this sport to a new group of people.
Leigh Spann and Coach Maria ask Pettygrue about how she found her passion for the sport and how she hopes to spread that passion.
The sport gets better the more people who participate in it. If you’re looking to learn more about running and walking and how to enjoy it, be sure to listen to previous episodes of Run for Fun.
