Residents report around 20 car break-ins in Hillsborough neighborhoods

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) — Families in southern Hillsborough County are keeping close watch on their driveways these days. Neighbors have reported at least 20 recent car break-ins.

One homeowner even has surveillance video showing teens rummaging through cars and sometimes taking off behind the wheel. Neighbors say the crooks are striking in Ruskin, Apollo Beach, and Riverview.

“I got up the next morning to take the dogs out around 5 a.m. and my truck was gone,” David Hernandez said. He swears he locked the car. “The worst part is, if you look at the video they’re kids, they’re teenagers.”

Deputies tracked down his truck the same day. The culprits ditched it with an empty tank.

“I might as well just buy a $1,000 car if people are going to steal my stuff,” Hernandez said. “You can’t have good things if they’re going to steal from you.”

Deputies won’t confirm how many arrests they’ve made in the case, but want you to let them know if you recognize anyone in the surveillance video.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
