A group of former Walmart workers plan to hold a protest Wednesday evening outside of the Brandon Walmart store which recently closed.
The group of protesters will include employees who lost their jobs when the store suddenly closed on April 13 citing “plumbing issues.” The closure impacted 400 full and part-time employees who will have to reapply for their jobs when the store reopens.
The Brandon store was one of five Walmarts across the country that closed suddenly. Workers were given a few hours notice about the closures.
Walmart handed out benefit packages, and held a job fair for the 400 employees, but a group demands that’s not enough.
A national organization, through United Food and Commercial Workers, that prides itself on challenging Walmart is hosting Wednesday’s protest.
Organizers say protestors will call on Walmart to reinstate all 2,000 workers who lost their jobs at the five stores. They want Walmart to guarantee the workers’ transfer to other stores at the same pay and also compensate them in the meantime.
Protesters also want Walmart to give the former workers an opportunity to return to their stores when they reopen.
The protest is planned for 5:15 p.m.
