WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A 20-year-old man was killed, and several others, including teenagers, were injured after a “running gun battle” between two cars early Sunday morning, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Grady Judd said a 26-year-old man was driving a light-colored Camry carrying a 20-year-old and two 17-year-olds out of a local bowling alley just before 1:13 a.m.
The sheriff said they were driving toward Martin Luther King Boulevard in the outskirts of Winter Haven when a dark-colored car with two men pulled up and began following them.
When they arrived at the intersection of Buckeye Loop and MLK Boulevard, a shootout broke out between the two vehicles, Judd said.
“If you look very close,” he said while holding pictures of the Camry. “you’ll see some of these bullets are entrance holes into this vehicles. Some are exit holes from the vehicle so the suspects were shooting back and forth at each other.”
The sheriff said friends of the people in the Toyota saw the gun battle from a distance and watched the Camry eased onto the roadside.
The sheriff’s office said the 20-year-old was dead from being shot eight times. The 26-year-old was shot eight times, one 17-year-old two times, and the other 17-year-old seven or eight times.
All the survivors are said to be in critical condition.
Winter Haven police responded to the scene first and found an assault rifle strapped around him and a gun tucked in his waist, according to the sheriff.
“This 20-year-old young man, really a kid, was living with a gun, and he died because of a gun,” Judd said.
The sheriff said the dark-colored sedan drove away from the scene and left a critically wounded man at the Winter Haven Hospital. Deputies were still looking for the vehicle as of Sunday morning.
According to Judd, one of the teen’s parents refused to cooperate. Judd said he questions the events leading up to the shooting.
“Oh by the way, what are you doing allowing two 17-year-old kids out with a 26-year-old and a 20-year-old?” he said.
At this time, no identities have been released as deputies determined who were the victims and who were the suspects. Judd said it not known if the shooting was gang-related.
The sheriff asked the community to help with whatever video, information, or evidence of damage they have.
“Kid’s aren’t supposed to kill kids, and we’ve got to stop it,” he said.
On top of the shootout involving those two cars, Sheriff Grady said his agency’s aviation unit found a third car “slinking around” in the area. Winter Haven police chased the car and two people jumped out, but the driver sped off. Grady said the car was later found on Avenue G on the other side of Winter Haven, but it was lit on fire. A handgun was recovered and those two people are in custody. It’s unclear if these people have any connection to the overnight shootout.
