UPDATE | A Polk County homeowner is being reunited with a 6-foot Jesus statue that was taken from his driveway on Friday.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the statue was taken by a junk dealer who spotted it on the side of the road and thought it was trash.

The agency said deputies are in the process of recovering the statue and returning it to its rightful owner.

ORIGINAL STORY | If you’ve found Jesus, you may want to give him back.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 6-foot Jesus statue went missing from a home on Terrace Drive South in Eagle Lake.

The homeowner told detectives the statue was left in the driveway, awaiting pickup by a restoration company to get a fresh coat of paint.

“Now, either someone stole Jesus, or someone thought Jesus was there for the taking (as folks will often discard of unwanted items at the end of the driveway). Regardless of the reason, this Eagle Lake resident wants his Jesus back,” PCSO said in a Facebook post that ended with the hashtags “#ThouShaltNotSteal” and “#WWJD” which stands for “What would Jesus do?”

According to the sheriff’s office, the statue weighs several hundred pounds, therefore stealing it would be considered grand theft–“grand as in, its monetary value, not grand as in, delightful,” the agency wrote on Facebook.

If you see Jesus (the statue), please call the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at  863-298-6200 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
