A deadly crash involving a rock-hauler truck shut down the eastbound and westbound lanes of Hwy 60 in Polk County during the busy Friday morning commute.

The crash occurred at 4800 Hwy. 60 East, just west of Bonnie Mine Rd. near Mulberry.

All lanes of Hwy 60 are now open.

According to the sheriff’s office, a Kenworth & Rock Hauler Trailer driven by Jose Ramos, 43, of Riverview, was traveling eastbound.

A Chevrolet Malibu, driven by James Everitt, 35, and Kelly Kersey, 34, was also traveling eastbound.

Preliminary findings suggest Ramos’ truck struck the rear of the Malibu, causing it to turn sidways and the truck struck it again on the driver’s side.

No criminal charges are expected, but civil citations are possible.

Everitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kersey was taken by helicopter for leg and internal injuries and is listed as critical, but stable.

Ramos suffered a minor injury.
