POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who hit a pedestrian on Interstate-4 in Polk County and left him to die.
Troopers said 22-year-old McKenzie J. Messick of Plant City was hit while walking on westbound I-4, just west of US-98. His body was found in the grass shoulder on the north side of the roadway.
Investigators found evidence at the scene and think the vehicle that hit the man may have front-end damage.
“We’re looking for a vehicle that possibly has headlight or turn signal damage,” said FHP Sgt. Steve Gaskins.
If drivers are involved in a collision, the law requires them to stop and render aid.
The crash happened sometime over the last 24 hours, according to Gaskins. “We’re trying to pin down the exact time frame,” he said.
Investigators are also trying to figure out why Messick was walking on the interstate. “He should not have been here as a pedestrian on the interstate. Pedestrians are not allowed,” said Gaskins.
The westbound lane of I-4 were closed near US-98 as troopers investigated the crash. All lanes reopened at 12:45 p.m.
Those with information on the incident are asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 813-558-1800 or Crime Stoppers.
