POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist that occurred early Monday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were called to the scene around 5 a.m.
The crash occurred at Washington Avenue and US Highway 27 near Lake Wales.
Deputies believe the crash may have occurred just after 2 a.m.
Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and found Ramond Johnson, 59, on a grassy shoulder of Washington Avenue, near the sidewalk, and rendered aid.
Johnson was taken to the Lake Wales Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, but he later died.
Deputies learned Johnson was traveling west on Washington Avenue and was struck by an unknown vehicle as he was nearing the north side of the road.
Johnson was ejected from his bicycle.
Photos of the victim and a possible suspect vehicle were obtained from security cameras in the area.
The vehicle appears to be a full-sized sedan.
