Police and fire crews responded to Mulberry Middle School Thursday after several students suddenly became sick after eating THC-infused gummy candy.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the children suddenly started complaining of symptoms of nausea, dizziness and one student nearly passed out.
Five students were transported to the hospital and treated for a drug overdose.
A sixth student was taken to the hospital by a parent, to be medically checked out.
“These are like 12 and 13-year-old kids. It’s a little ridiculous that stuff like this happens,” parent Amanda Cochran said as she picked up her daughter from the school.
“I’m actually really glad it wasn’t my kid, and I feel really bad for the parents of the kids it did happen to.”
Polk County Sheriff Judd said a 12-year-old boy supplied the candy. He’s being charged with seven felonies and a misdemeanor.
“We have long been concerned about the dangers of marijuana-infused candy, and that it would get into the hands of, and poison, children. Here’s an example of that,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
“Fortunately for us it was not some other drug that was more dangerous in small doses than this was.”
