Pinellas Park man charged with murder after girlfriend’s body found in home

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (WFLA) – A Pinellas Park man is accused of shooting and killing his live-in girlfriend during an argument at their home on Tuesday night.

Thomas Lee Owens II, age 52, was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.

Detectives say Owens and his girlfriend Nellie Denise Collins, age 59, were arguing around 6:15 p.m. at their home on 59th Street. The argument escalated and Owens pulled out a pistol and shot Collins.

Owens also pointed the gun at his sister, who was also at the home. She was able to run to a neighbor’s house where she called 911.

When police arrived, they say they found Owens armed with a handgun outside of the residence inside a screen porch.

During a short tense standoff with police, Owens refused to drop the gun after several commands to do so.  He eventually dropped the gun and was taken into custody.

Police then went inside the house and found the body of Collins inside.

Owens is being held without bond in the Pinellas County Jail.STORIES OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON-
