Kanina Eurez is watching Clearwater’s deadly Stand Your Ground case closely.
“This is very troubling that another person lost their life,” said Eurez. “If somebody was harassing my family, I may have reacted the same, does that give the shooter the right to use deadly force.”
Eurez’s husband, David James, was shot and killed in front of his daughter in 2010 by Trevor Dooley in Valrico during an argument.
Dooley claimed he was standing his ground.
“The law needs to be modified because right now, basically a person can just say that they’re in fear of their life,” she said.
Dooley was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to eight years, but released in 2016 on bond after he appealed for a new trial.
He’s been living in Spring Hill ever since.
Friday, Markeis McGlockton’s family protested outside the Pinellas County courthouse for State Attorney Bernie McCabe to charge Michael Drejka.
Eurez’s message to them, “Don’t give up.”
“Hard to deal with all of these years later but my heart goes out to you. I hope that you get the justice that you’re seeking. It’s a difficult situation and it wasn’t fair,” said Eurez.
McGlockton’s funeral is Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church at 11 a.m. in Largo.
