TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) – A Tarpon Springs family started their day on Thursday by finding a strange man sleeping in a 7-year-old boy’s room.
At about 7:40 a.m., police responded to a reported burglary at a home in the 1700 block of Coppertree Dr. and arrested 30-year-old Christopher Matthew Weyh.
The boy said he wasn’t scared, but was surprised to find Weyh sleeping in his bed.
He and his sister went to wake up their aunt, Jennifer Gosselin.
“They shook me and said, ‘where’s the clothes I’m supposed to change into’ and ‘who’s the strange man sleeping in my bed?’” Gosselin said.
Gosselin arrived at the home early that morning to watch the kids while her sister went to her nursing job.
Sometime between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., Weyh apparently let himself into the unlocked home.
He walked right past the kids asleep on the couch.
“I gave him a big nudge really shook him, you know, opened up his eyes for a second acknowledged me a small amount and went right back to bed,” Gosselin said.
Gosselin and the children went to a neighbor’s house and called 911.
“He could have been a convict or criminal for all I knew,” she said.
When questioned by police, officers said Weyh became verbally and physically combative and that they had to use a stun gun to take him into custody.
He did not steal any items or assault anyone else inside of the home, police said.
Investigators say Weyh has a family member a few doors down and must have walked into the wrong house, assuming it was theirs.
“It was pretty scary as a parent to think of what could have happened,” Jessica Gosselin admitted.
Weyh is charged with trespass in a structure, resisting an officer without violence and 2 counts of violation of probation on drug possession and trafficking in stolen property convictions.
He remains in the Pinellas County Jail awaiting trial.
