A man was arrested for drunk driving after he allegedly struck a police volunteer and broke her leg.

Largo police said the officer, who had been directing traffic in uniform, was found pinned between two cars in the 2000 block of East Bay Drive on Friday at about 8 p.m. Her right leg was broken.

The officer’s name was not released.

Police identified the driver who struck her as 54-year-old Jay Martin Lyman of Clearwater.

According to an affidavit, Martin failed field sobriety exercises and “exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes.” Officers also detected the odor of alcohol coming from his breath.

He was arrested for driving under the influence (serious bodily injury) and transported to the Largo Police Department, where he refused to provide a breath sample, the affidavit states.

Online records show he was released from the Pinellas County Jail on $5,000 bond.
