ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – A transient man is behind bars after he tried to rape a 61-year-old woman at knifepoint in St. Petersburg.

Traymonte Snipes, 27, was caught in the act by police near the 500 block of 16th St. North.

According to an affidavit,  Snipes approached the victim at a bus stop, grabbed her arm and stated: “Let’s go, you know what I want.”  She tried to get away, but he grabbed her other arm, threatened her with a knife and said: “If you don’t come with me, I’ll stab you.  He then forcibly carried her into an alley, behind a dumpster where he tried to sexually assault her. Police said she tried to get away from Snipes several times, but he blocked her from leaving.  A sergeant with the St. Petersburg Police Department was able to stop the attack and took Snipes into custody.  A knife was found in the alley at the crime scene.

Snipes was charged with sexual battery with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.
