INDIAN ROCKS BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – Hurricane Matthew may be moving up the east coast of Florida but the storm is churning up the Gulf here on the west side, too. That’s creating the risk of rip currents.
Not all people wanted to get away from Hurricane Matthew.
“We usually travel to where a big storm is like Hurricane Matthew.” said Kehan Reed, who was at Indian Rocks Beach to enjoy the high winds and kite board.
“It’s too windy to use an actual kite board kite today so I’m using a trainer kite just to practice,” Reed added.
Kite surfers said the surf should be best during the next two days.
Others traveled just for the view. “Florida is a paradise no matter what the weather is,” Dianne Stevenson said.
Stevenson said she won’t be leaving anytime soon. “Because this is a historical event going on,” she added.
“We’re just enjoying the Floridian coast today and trying to get away a little bit, let the girls play in the ocean,” said Alicia Richardson, who evacuated to the area.
The wind and waves weren’t the only attraction. Many said this is prime time for digging up treasures.
“I’ve been going on a lot of websites about metal detecting right here in Indian Rocks Beach and with the erosion and everything, they say they’re finding some pretty good stuff,” John Mcbrearty said.
People found hundreds of shark teeth.
