The massive 40 ton, 200-foot barge that washed up on St. Pete Beach last week could be there for a while longer, according to Luhr Bros., the company that owns it.

It washed ashore near Postcard Inn after breaking loose during a strong storm.

Barge stuck on St. Pete Beach.

Crews are using the barge to carry material for an erosion prevention project where limestone rocks are being laid in areas of the beach, according to project manager Matt Gardner.

Garnder said crews have tried “numerous times to safely retrieve the barge, but due to the high winds and waves, a safe retrieval has not been possible.”

“Once the waves and winds settle down, crews will retrieve the barge and secure it back on anchor,” Garnder said.
