PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A woman has died after being involved in a shootout with Largo police officers.
8 On Your Side is still working to learn the woman’s identity and why she began shooting at officers in the first place.
According to the Largo Police Department, they received a call around 11:15 a.m. about an armed woman in the parking lot of the St. Pete Auto Auction, also known as Manheim Auto Auction, at 14950 Roosevelt Blvd. Police alluded that there was some type of burglary incident happening, it’s still under investigation.
As officers were en route to the scene, they received more information letting them know the person was a white female and that she running westbound on 49th Street.
Police say she then approached the intersection of Frontage Road and Roosevelt Boulevard and fired several shots at the officers. One of the shots hit a patrol car windshield.
According to LPD, the woman then began running southbound on Frontage Road toward the Pinellas County Criminal Court complex and wastewater treatment plant.
As officers followed the woman, she turned around to fire several shots at them and police fired back, hitting her. Police say she was taken to Northside Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. No officers or people in the area were injured.
Police say they are unsure why the woman was at the auto auction center in the first place.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also helping with the investigation.
