OLDSMAR, Fla. (WFLA) – Pinellas County detectives are investigating an ATM explosion at a bank in Oldsmar.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said the explosion happened around 3:20 a.m. Monday at the BB&T bank at 3209 Tampa Road.
Deputies responded to the incident and noticed the explosion came from the drive-thru ATM on the south side of the building.
The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office with the help of the ATF and FBI, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
“It seems quite a brazen attempt to get money. It shows people are desperate and they’ll do whatever it takes,” said Haden Page, who runs Oldsmar Florist next to the bank.
He came to his shop Monday morning and noticed the commotion.
“Then I looked out back, to check back there, and you could see the parts of the ATM all over, so obviously there was either an explosion, truck impact, something with an explosive force,” Page said.
Eagle 8 HD flew over the scene around 11 a.m. Monday. The drive thru and back parking area were littered with ATM pieces.
Crime scene technicians worked the scene and put down evidence markers next to important pieces.
No one was hurt, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
The bank was expected to remain closed Monday.
News Channel 8 reached out to a corporate spokesman with BB&T for comment and he referred all questions to the sheriff’s office.
