ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – Pinellas County sheriff’s detectives are conducting a death investigation where a former mayor of St. Pete Beach was found dead inside his home.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives assigned to the robbery/homicide unit were called to the home located on Gulf Boulevard.

Family members became concerned over the welfare of Stephen Douglas McFarlin, 53, after they had not heard from him for awhile.

Family members went to his home and found McFarlin dead.

Detectives say it appears McFarlin died of a self-inflicted injury and his death does not appear suspicious.
McFarlin served as the mayor of St. Pete Beach from 2011 to 2014.
