CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — Clearwater first responders are being honored for their response to a deadly plane crash last month.

Three people died Feb. 1 after a plane crashed into a mobile home in the Bayside Waters Mobile Home Park.

Officials said the quick actions of first responders likely saved lives.

On Monday, the Clearwater City Council honored crews with Clearwater Fire & Rescue Station 49, who were the first at the scene that day.

“There’s no amount of planning or thought, or things like that to anticipate a call like this,” said Clearwater Fire Medic Kenny Sweitzer Jr., who was the acting lieutenant on the first engine to arrive at the scene.

Sweitzer said extensive training helped them to make a split-second decision to drive a different route to the scene, and drive the wrong way in traffic to get there quicker.

“Fire doubles pretty rapidly, we know that these trailers burn very hot and very quick, so we had to make the decision to do that,” Sweitzer said.

First responders quickly evacuated neighbors, and put out the fire that was rapidly spreading to nearby homes.

“It had already started to catch the neighbors house on fire and once it goes, it’s even harder to catch up and fight that,” said Clearwater Fire Medic Nina Borders. “You switch from that kind of, what I think people would fear naturally, to just doing it, and you get it done and you know it has to be done.”

All of the first responders recognized credited their extensive training for helping to respond to a scene of that magnitude.

“Without that dedication and training, and the ability to know that the priority is stopping it from moving to other buildings, this could have been much more involved than what it was. It’s actually a miracle we say, that it was one unit and just the deaths that it was,” said Clearwater Fire Medic John Gray.

The first responders said they’re grateful to be recognized, and that it’s all part of the oath they take to protect.

“You get a lot of people who want to recognize you and say that you did something great, but anyone in my position that took the oath to do what I do would respond the same way,” said Gray.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The NTSB has not yet released a preliminary report.
