PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A fiery four-car crash snarled traffic on the Howard Frankland Bridge on Sunday.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident around 7:40 p.m.

Troopers say Sarah Lam, 32, and Ngung Thi Nguyen, 67, stopped on the outside northbound shoulder of the roadway after they ran out of gas.

A road ranger driven by 29-year-old Adam Lopez stopped behind them to help.

A semi-truck and a 2004 Chevy driven by 40-year-old Alvaro Vizcarra had been traveling behind them. The semi changed lanes into Vizcarra’s path, causing Vizcarra to steer into the outside shoulder to avoid a collision. Vizcarra hit the back of Lopez’s car, which then hit Lam’s vehicle.

Both of Lam and Lopez’s vehicles caught fire.

The semi-truck did not stop at the scene and was last seen traveling northbound on I-275.

Lopez, Lam, Nguyen and a passenger in Vizcarra’s vehicle were all taken to Tampa General Hospital. Troopers say Lopez suffered serious injuries.

Those with information about the incident are encouraged to call FHP at 813-558-1800.
