CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A 16-year-old died Monday after a shooting in Clearwater, according to police.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. in the 1200 block of Engman Street, according to police.

Officials said the 16-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation, according to police.

“It’s definitely disturbing something so close could happen right up the street from my house,” said Alex Visbal who walked his dog by the scene. “I’m only one block over.”

Police weren’t releasing many details at the time this article was written, as detectives continued to interview witnesses in an effort to figure out what happened and how a teen ended up being killed.

Investigators say the shooting happened at a site that includes several private apartments for families who qualify through the nonprofit Homeless Empowerment Program.

The organization’s CEO Ashley Lowery released the following statement to 8 On Your Side:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic event and loss of life that occurred yesterday. Our sincere condolences are with the family and loved ones of the individuals involved. The well-being and safety of our residents, employees and community is the utmost concern. We will focus on healing the pain from this tragedy while fully cooperating with clearwater police as they investigate. We remain committed to providing a safe, nurturing environment for those in need as we have for over 40 years.”
