TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Authorities have recovered the body of a 33-year-old boater who went missing after a dinghy sank in Madeira Beach Friday night.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said Dwight Haggins was last seen around 11 p.m. Friday after the dinghy he was in sank behind Madeira Beach Fundamental.

Deputies said Haggins, his 6-year-old son and two friends had launched the dingy from the Madeira Beach McDonalds and were heading to a boat that was anchored offshore. The dinghy went under the Tom Stuart Causeway before it started to take on water and sank behind the school.

Deputies said the three other passengers were able to swim to shore unharmed, but Haggins, who was not wearing a life vest, did not.

The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death.
