CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — The 4-year-old boy who was critically injured after being struck by a Clearwater resort valet driver Sunday has been identified as the son of Major League Baseball pitcher Erik Swanson.
On Tuesday, the Clearwater Police Department said the boy, Toby Swanson, remained in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.
According to MLB.com, Blue Jays manager John Schneider shared the difficult news ahead of the team’s spring training game against the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland.
“Thanks to the incredible work from Clearwater first responders, Toby, is on the road to recovery and is surrounded by his family. Erik will be away from the team for a while, family comes first,” the team said in a statement. “Our love, support and prayers are with Erik, Madison, Toby and the entire Swanson family. Out of respect for Erik and his family, we’re not going to comment further on this.”
An Opal Sands Resort valet driver was operating the 2024 Ford Expedition that struck Toby on 430 South Gulfview Boulevard in Clearwater. The boy was airlifted to an area hospital following the incident.
According to police, the driver remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
Earlier this month, the Blue Jays shared a photo of Swanson and his son Toby on Facebook with the caption, “I wanna be just like Dad.” The Blue Jays spring training facility is located in Dunedin, about 25 miles west of Tampa.
