Two people are dead after deputies say they were hit by a suspected DUI driver in a hit-and-run.
The crash happened around 6:45 Saturday night on Gulf Boulevard in Treasure Island. Investigators say 74-year-old Nicholas Desanta and 81-year-old Beverly Gran were walking together at the time.
When the pair tried crossing Gulf Boulevard near 118th Avenue, Pinellas County deputies say they were hit by a Ford Explorer driven by 38-year-old Aleem Reezan Temon Hamid. The sheriff’s office says that man immediately left the scene after the crash.
Desanta and Gran were rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Just after 8 p.m., Treasure Island police officers found Hamid on Park Place, still behind the wheel of the Explorer. Officers say he showed signs of impairment and refused to cooperate.
Hamid was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail. He is facing several charges including two counts of DUI manslaughter.
