A man is behind bars after a woman was attacked with a shovel and robbed in New Port Richey last week, authorities said.

Jamel Hubbard, 34, was arrested and booked into the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center Wednesday.

Hubbard is accused of attacking a 28-year-old woman with a shovel outside of a home in the  6600 block of Ruth Drive on Aug. 9.

Deputies said Hubbard approached the woman and said he needed to “get his girlfriend out of jail.”

Then, he hit her over the head with a shovel twice and strangled her. He made off with $300 and some other belongings, according to an affidavit.

Deputies did not disclose whether the victim and Hubbard were known to each other, but an officer said he saw them together before the incident.

The victim identified Hubbard by his alias, “Mailman,” and another witness was able to identify him in a photo lineup.

Hubbard was taken into custody and charged with robbery with a weapon. He’s being held on a $100,000 bond.
