TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — More expert witnesses are scheduled to testify in the murder trial of Curtis Reeves, the retired police captain who shot and killed a man inside a Wesley Chapel movie theater eight years ago.
A retired FBI special agent who is an expert on video audio recordings testified Monday about the security camera video being used in Reeves’ trial, and returned for more testimony on Tuesday.
The judge sent the jury home before 5 p.m. on Monday but told them to expect to stay late Tuesday.
However, that was not the case after the judge sent the jury home early to discuss a legal matter to talk over with attorneys.
On Tuesday morning, the jury also heard from Joanna Turner, who witnessed the shooting with her husband. She said she watched Oulson throw something at Reeves before he started throwing popcorn.
More expert witnesses are expected to be called by the defense.
The judge told attorneys early in the trial she expects them to wrap the case up before Friday because she has other cases scheduled for the following week.
In addition to the retired FBI agent, Vivian Reeves also testified at her husband’s murder trial on Monday. Vivian Reeves is now 75 years old and has been married to Curtis Reeves for more than 50 years. She told jurors that during those 50 years she has watched her husband’s health and physical abilities decline.
The defense also presented an aging expert on Monday that told jurors, as a person ages, they feel more vulnerable, especially when threatened.
Vivian Reeves told the jury she and her husband made a decision one morning in January 2014 to go to a movie.
The defense also called Thomas Peck Jr. who was working as the general manager of the Cobb theater on the day the shooting took place.
Peck said he spoke to Reeves who complained about someone using a cell phone in the theater and described Reeves as polite and not angry, he also told the jury Reeves didn’t seem to make that big of a deal about the cell phone.
Peck didn’t think much of the situation until someone came running out of the theater.
“The next thing I remember is that somebody came out of the theater and said he shot him, he shot him,” Peck said who then called 911 and walked into the theater where the shooting had just taken place. “I noticed Mr. Oulson on the floor unfortunately and I also noticed Mr. Reeves sitting on the chair.”
The defense is expected to call more witnesses on Wednesday.
