(WFLA) – Panera Bread announced this week it will be switching to serving ‘clean bacon’ at its restaurants.
Starting this week, the bacon served at Panera on salads, sandwiches and in soups will no longer have additives like sodium nitrite and sodium phosphate according to CNN. These additives were used to cure the meat.
The company switched to celery powder as a replacement and also removed artificial flavoring.
Instead, it will start using extra applewood smoke to create “deeper, more complex bacon flavor,” according to CNN.
