A Palm Harbor oncologist is accused of buying and administering cancer drugs unregistered and unapproved by FDA, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Dr. Anda Norbergs, 59, is a licensed physician in Florida and the owner and operator of East Lake Oncology, a cancer treatment clinic. She is indicted on 21 counts of receiving misbranded drugs and health care fraud.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Norbergs ordered and directed others at the clinic to order cancer treatment drugs from foreign distributors. The drugs came from “foreign establishments that had not been registered with or approved by the FDA.”
The patients at the clinic didn’t know that these misbranded drugs were administered to them. The clinic then billed Medicare and private insurances for the FDA-approved versions of the drugs, according to the US State Attorney’s Office.
If convicted, Norbergs will face up to three years in federal prison for each of the nine counts of receiving misbranded drugs and up to 10 years on each of the 12 counts of health care fraud.
Patients and family members of patients treated by Dr. Norbergs and East Lake Oncology who may have questions or concerns regarding medical treatment received should contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General for more information via a dedicated email account Dr.Norbergs.patients@oig.hhs.gov.
