OSCEOLA COUNTY, FL (WFLA)- Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Daniel Tobar and charged him with Child Neglect with Great Bodily Harm. The investigation began on July 13 when deputies responded to Nemours Children’s Hospital. When they arrived, they spoke with a mother who indicated she brought her 2-month old son to the hospital because his leg was swollen. She originally noticed a mark on his leg a few days before, but thought it was an allergic reaction to food. Doctors told the mother her son’s leg was broken along with other fractures. Since her husband had been caring for him, she asked him about the fractures. Deputies say that initially, he said he fell asleep on the child and didn’t realize the injury was severe. When Tobar learned of his son’s injury, he brought his other son, the victim’s twin brother into the hospital because he noticed similar swelling on his leg. Doctors determined he also had a broken leg according to the detectives report.
On July 14, detectives brought Tobar in for questioning. Detectives say initially he did not cooperate, but eventually Tobar told detectives he fell asleep on the infants, but awoke when one started crying. He went to put both infants in their cribs, but tripped and fell on top of them. He added he was afraid to tell his wife what had happened.
Based on the fact Tobar did not seek medical treatment for the children and initially was untruthful, detectives charged him with Child Neglect. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail. The investigation is on-going with additional charges pending.
