PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — St. Pete/Clearwater is establishing itself as a major Olympic training destination, and teams from all over the world are taking notice.
In preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater is thrilled to welcome the Olympic BMX teams from six countries throughout February and March. The National BMX teams from Russia, Germany, Japan, USA, the Netherlands, and Latvia will be in the areaRELATED: Oldsmar BMX track seeks Olympic competitors
In addition to BMX, St. Pete/Clearwater will also be hosting the 2016 Kona One North American Championships on Clearwater beach March 3-6th. This event will also be the home of the RSX (Olympic Class) Windsurfing Midwinters. The presence of these events solidifies St. Pete/Clearwater’s position as a first-pick training ground for Olympic greatness.
In 2015, the St. Pete Sports Commission launched “Ready. Set. Rio!”-An initiative to attract Olympic competitors from around the globe to train for Rio de Janeiro in the USOC officially sanctioned training site of St. Pete/Clearwater.
Just last summer, Visit St. Pete Clearwater hosted the FIVP St. Pete Grand Slam presented by AVP, the first volleyball qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.RELATED: BMX SuperCross bikers converge at new Oldsmar track
Additionally, Visit St. Pete Clearwater hosted the Grand Prix, as well as the BMX Gator Nationals at its new, Olympic-sanctioned training facility in Oldsmar.
