SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A San Marcos police officer is in stable condition after being struck by a car Saturday evening along Interstate Highway 35.

According to a city of San Marcos press release, officer Claudia Cormier, a 3-year police officer, was in stable condition and under sedation after undergoing emergency surgery at Seton-Hays hospital in Kyle.

Police say the crash happened just after 9:45 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-35, just north of the McCarty Overpass. Officer Cormier was responding to a call of items in the roadway when she was struck by a 2000 Ford Expedition driven by Neil Sheehan, 58, of Flower Mound, Texas.

A Department of Public Safety trooper arrested Sheehan for Intoxication Assault on a Public Servant, a second-degree felony, and Failure to Slow Causing Serious Bodily Injury.  The Trooper obtained a warrant for his blood and the results are pending.

Sheehan was transported and booked into the Hays County Jail.  The collision is being investigated jointly by the San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team (CIT), as well as the Texas DPS State Crash Team.
