ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – On Thursday morning two St. Petersburg police officers issued 31 tickets – in just three hours. They were stopping drivers making illegal left turns.

The officers were stationed to catch drivers turning left from 94th Avenue to go west on Gandy Boulevard. A digital sign, markings on the pavement and a sign at the intersection warn drivers not to turn.

The St. Petersburg Police Department received a request from a construction supervisor, worried cars backing up might affect worker safety.

On Thursday News Channel 8 watched drivers making illegal turns. We found that if one driver does it, pack mentality says, everyone can do it.

“Everyone makes a left,” one driver told us as he prepared to violate the law.

Many drivers promised they would follow the law, then turned illegally right in front of our camera.

The fine for an illegal turn is $166. Cops could have a field day, citing driver after driver. “This is inconvenient to not be able to turn left here,” a driver said.

“How stupid is it?” another driver asked.

“It is very confusing,” yet another motorist said.

8 On Your Side shared our findings with the Florida Department of Transportation.. A spokesperson agreed to review this intersection to see if the “no left” rule needs to be clearer.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
