(WFLA) – GOES-R, the first of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next generation of weather satellites, is set to launch from Cape Canaveral in early November.
The satellite is loaded with new technology that will allow meteorologists to better observe our atmosphere and make more accurate weather forecasts.
The images produced by GOES-R will be four times higher resolution than the prior generation of satellites – that’s like going from a tube TV to high definition.
These pictures will be sent back to Earth five times faster.
Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Ian Oliver went to see this satellite in a clean room over at Florida’s Space Coast before it leaves Earth on its 20-year mission.
