Today, hundreds of newspapers across the U.S. are standing up to President Donald Trump’s attacks on the media.
From the New York Times to the Tampa Bay Times and the Lakeland Ledger, newspapers are supporting free press.
The papers will all run editorials as part of an effort first proposed by the Boston Globe earlier this month. The Globe says the project is not “anti-trump,” but more of a “pro-press” project.
This stems from the President’s continued attacks on the media, constantly using the term, “fake news” to describe mainstream outlets such as CNN and MSNBC and the NYT.
A recent tweet of his went so far as to say the media purposely causes great division and distrust, and even war. He said about the media, “they are very dangerous and sick.”
Today, each newspaper participating will have its own editorial article supporting free press, moving the conversation about the subject out of Washington and into local communities.
According to CNN, new polling by Quinnipiac shows that most Americans, 65 percent, regard the news media as an important part of democracy, not an “enemy.”
26 percent of respondents, including 51 percent of Republicans, sided with President Trump’s “enemy” rhetoric.
