School bus destroyed by massive fire, 28 students saved

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A school bus in Durham, North Carolina, was destroyed after a massive fire on Friday afternoon.

On Friday at 2 p.m., the Durham Fire Department was dispatched to a large vehicle fire. The first arriving unit found a Durham County Public School Bus fully engulfed with black smoke and fire.

The 2010 Freightliner C2 bus was occupied by 28 students and a bus driver and was able to be evacuated unharmed.

A DPS transportation director said the bus driver noticed smoke when flames formed under the front of the bus.

The department responded with 11 firefighters and it took 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The bus was destroyed by the fire. Durham Public Schools was made aware and all students were taken care of and accounted for by DPS.

The Durham County Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to conduct an investigation, which is still ongoing.

No one was injured.
