POWHATAN, Va. (WRIC) — The Powhatan’s Sheriff’s Office is applauding a K-9 deputy after it finds two missing children.
In a Facebook post Sunday morning, the Powatan Sheriff’s Office says two 8-year-old kids became lost in the woods before dusk on Saturday.
After a 45-minute search by parents and neighbors, the situation escalated as daylight became limited.
The Sheriff’s Office says that’s when Deputies were called in — along with K-9 deputy, Bane.
After less than 15 minutes in the woods, Bane was able to sniff out the children’s path and find them.
Now the children are home safe — according to the Sheriff’s Office.
On social media, the Sheriff’s Office detailed the importance of continuing its K-9 program.
“Maintaining a K-9 program is expensive and very time consuming and that is why many agencies the size of the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office do not have one. But incidents like last night’s two 8 year old children being lost in the woods are why the Sheriff keeps the program going strong. “
