SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) — New Mexico officials held a press conference Wednesday discussing the fatal shooting on a movie set involving actor and producer Alec Baldwin.

During the press conference, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told reporters a limited amount of movie set staff were present in the area where the shooting took place, despite the fact that nearly 100 people were on set at the time.

According to Mendoza, authorities took in nearly 600 items of evidence, 500 rounds of “mixed” ammunition and several pieces of clothing and accessories. Mendoza said the 500 rounds of ammunition included a mixture of blanks, dummy rounds and live rounds.

Police also took in three firearms that were found in the area of the shooting.

“We believe that we have in our possession, the firearm that was fired by Mr. Baldwin,” Mendoza said. “This is the firearm we believe discharged the bullet. We also believe that we have the spent shell casing from the bullet that was fired from the gun.”

Evidence collected from the set will be submitted to the FBI crime lab in Quantico, Virginia, for analysis.

“We are working thoroughly to gather all the facts of the investigation, continue interviews and further analyze and process the evidence,” Mendoza said.

Authorities added it’s still too early to comment on charges at this stage of the investigation.

“If the sheriff’s office determines during our investigation a crime has occurred and probable cause exists, an arrest or arrests will be made,” Mendoza said.

While it’s unclear if the ammunition fired during the incident was a live bullet, there are new reports about what allegedly happened just hours before Halyna Hutchins’ death. According to Sharon Waxman, the editor-in-chief of “The Wrap”, sources on the set allege crewmembers had been firing live ammo off-set earlier that day.

“There were crew members who had gone off and done, sort of passing the time fun shooting at targets out in the desert before the shooting occurred with guns from the set, including the gun that killed Hutchins,” Waxman said.

Legal experts say Baldwin and other members of the production team could be facing tremendous fallout, likely in the form of civil lawsuits. The district attorney’s office says criminal charges have not been ruled out.
