NASA marks the 60th anniversary of its establishment as a U.S. government agency today.
“For six decades, NASA has led the peaceful exploration of space, making discoveries about our planet, our solar system, and our universe.”
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed NASA’s founding legislation, the 1958 National Aeronautics and Space Act, on July 29, 1958.
NASA considers its birthday to be Oct. 1, the day the agency opened for business.
T. Keith Glennan was the first administrator.
“Our history tells a story of exploration, innovation and discoveries. The next 60 years, that story continues,” NASA said as it released the video in the player above today.
