ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Another mother has turned to 8 On Your Side for help dealing with alleged bullying at John Hopkins Middle School.
Just last week, parents turned to News Channel 8 in the hopes of helping their daughter. In both cases, the parents say they fear for their children’s safety, while Pinellas County Schools officials point out the district’s zero-tolerance policy against bullying.
Yet, again, a mother tells 8 On Your Side the policy is not fully enforced.
“It tears me up greatly,” said Lisa Bechtel, the mother of an 11-year-old girl at John Hopkins. “I feel like I can’t depend on the people in the school to keep her safe.”
Bechtel’s daughter was secretly videotaped in the bathroom by two classmates a few months ago. Both students involved were later expelled. But now, Lisa says friends of those girls have harassed, targeted and taunted her daughter.
“I don’t want her to be terrified,” Bechtel said about sending her daughter to school each day. “I want them to follow the law, have zero-tolerance for bullying, protect our children.”
It’s the same terrifying feeling felt by Rene and Stacia Lopez about their 12-year-old daughter. “I want to feel like it’s safe to send my daughter to school,” Stacia told 8 On Your Side last week.
The Lopez family called News Channel 8 after their emails and phone calls to school officials went unanswered for two months.
On Monday, 8 On Your Side spoke with the district’s spokeswoman about the parents’ claims school officials aren’t helping. “We completely sympathize with parents and we understand their child is their priority and their child is our priority, too,” Lisa Wolf said.
The district has a full-time bullying prevention specialist who not only helps children but also trains administrators every year.
At John Hopkins, officials investigated 14 bullying complaints during the 2013-2014 school year. Half of them were reported to law enforcement after the school’s initial investigation.
After 8 On Your Side got involved, the Lopez family met with school officials, who are now launching a full investigation.HAVE TIME FOR ONE MORE STORY? CHECK OUT THESE:
