TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The largest auto recall in U.S. history grew even larger this week.

Toyota is recalling an additional 1.5 million cars because of concerns over the Takata airbag. This adds to the 68.8 million cars from 17 car makers worldwide that have been recalled.

The air bags can explode and send deadly shrapnel into drivers and passengers of cars with the Takata airbag.

Keith Ridley drives a Ford Mustang and received a letter in July 2015 advising him that his car is part of the recall.

“I am very reluctant to drive the car while it’s in this state,” said Ridley.

Ridley says he calls the dealer every three months to see if they have the replacement part and even called Ford in Detroit to find if there were any answers.

“I even kind of asked, well what would happen if I was in an accident and it just deployed normally, what would you replace it with,’ said Ridley.

The latest letter he received tells him a replacement part should be available in the fourth quarter of 2016.

“It’s the same sort of story that I’ve been told all the way along when I’ve talked with Ford, but at least that’s the first letter that I’ve had with a date,” said Ridley.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a web site that allows car owners to find out if their car is part of the recall. The link can be found here.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the pace of the recall.

“Unfortunately, the pace at which Takata and the automakers are replacing these faulty airbags is way too slow. The top priority must be doing whatever is necessary to get these potentially-deadly airbags out of people’s cars as quickly as possible,” said Nelson.
